EDITORIAL: Good news [The Hutchinson News, Kan.]
(Hutchinson News, The (KS) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jan. 18--The good news: Hutchinson City Council races have attracted some candidates.
The bad news: Just one of three races is competitive.
But there still is time to become a candidate. The filing deadline for spring elections is noon Tuesday.
City council members Ron Sellers and Dave Razo have hit their term limits, and Dean Brigman chose not to seek re-election.
The only contested race is the at-large position occupied by Brigman. But there are two qualified candidates -- retired police officer Clay Rothe and Jade Piros de Carvalho, president of the marketing firm called LogicMaze, which is owned by The Hutchinson News.
Unfortunately -- but not because of the people who filed -- Sellers' and Razo's posts have drawn just one candidate each. Retired chamber leader Jon Daveline and former Hutchinson school district employee and current city advisory volunteer Nancy Soldner, will be unopposed for Sellers' and Razo's seats, respectively, unless other candidates file before the deadline. Yet, if Soldner and Daveline remain the only two candidates for those positions, Hutch still will be represented by two intelligent, thoughtful council members. That is in no way an endorsement -- voters should welcome more candidates in all three races -- but rather an observation.
So the good news remains that council races have drawn some solid candidates. But voters and the city would be better served by having a variety from whom to choose.
It is not too late to become part of the variety.
