Glasgow State Nursing Facility move-in date delayed
GLASGOW, Jan 19, 2013 (Glasgow Daily Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
While it may look finished, it will be another six months before work is complete on the construction of the new building that will house the Glasgow State Nursing Facility.
"We anticipate construction of the facility to be complete in approximately six months," said Gwenda Bond, assistant communications director for the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services.
The new facility is a one-story structure consisting of 72,000 square feet and is licensed for 100 beds.
The new facility will replace the current multi-story building and is being constructed in front of the current one.
Glasgow State Nursing Facility is a state-owned-and-operated long-term care center that provides care for people who are mentally ill and need both mental health treatment and skilled nursing services. Many of the residents also have intellectual and developmental disabilities.
"Once construction is completed, it should take 30 to 45 days to complete all the necessary tests, stock supplies and get residents moved from the old facility," Bond said.
In August 2012, the target date for completion was December with the move anticipated for January, pending no weather or other construction delays.
State officials had originally thought the building would be finished by the fall of 2012 but due to weather delays and soil conditions the anticipated completion date was pushed back a couple of months, according to an August 2012 Glasgow Daily Times article.
Another problem with the new building was discovered in August.
"There was a delay due to a portion of the project involving a concrete slab that was installed on engineered fill. The problem was identified in August 2012," Bond said. "It then took nearly four months to determine what caused the problem and to design a fix. While that issue was being corrected, however, work was able to proceed on about 70 percent of the building. Scheduled completion of the building is now July."
