A La Conner attorney has been suspended for neglecting a client and appearing to have taken her money, according to the Washington State Bar Association.
The bar association announced the three-year suspension of Carol V. Cornwall-Edson Thursday afternoon, based on a Jan. 10 Supreme Court decision.
The bar association's disciplinary board filed a report in August outlining five allegations against Cornwall-Edson, all stemming from her handling of a client in 2010.
The report indicates t h a t C o r n w a l l -- E d s o n failed to appear at two separate court dates for a client and to communicate and return the client's phone calls.
The report also alleges that Cornwall-Edson did not refund the $500 her client paid in fees, nor did she put $500 in advance fees into a trust account.
The disciplinary board s t a t e s t h a t C o r n w a l l -- Edson lied to the bar association during the investigation of the complaints against her.
Th e b a r a s s o c i a t i o n orders Cornwall-Edson to pay the client $500 plus 12 percent interest from November 2010.
Her reinstatement will depend on her compliance with the restitution order.
According to her bar association profile, Cornwall practices criminal and human rights law, dispute resolution and litigation. She has practiced law since 2000.
