Ferrer powers into Australian Open quarterfinals
MELBOURNE, Jan 20, 2013 (Xinhua via COMTEX) --
Fourth seed David Ferrer wore
down Japan's Kei Nishikori in three sets to reach the
quarterfinals at the Australian Open here on Sunday for a third
straight year.
The Spaniard was far too consistent and disciplined for the
16th-seeded Nishikori, winning 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 in two hours ten
minutes.
Ferrer early broke Asia's highest ranked player to go up 3-1 in
the first set and closed it out with relative ease.
The Spaniard steamed to a 5-0 lead in the second set before
saving three break points to serve out the set.
Nishikori battled hard in the third set though he appeared to
be hampered by a knee problem. he traded breaks of serve with
Ferrer throughout until the decisive one coming in the ninth game.
Ferrer grabbed a 5-4 advantage and comfortably served out the
match.
"The start of the first and second set was very important. I
had four of five break points down, and I made it. It was the key
(to win)." said Ferrer.
Ferrer will play against compatriot Nicolas Almagro in the
quarterfinals, who qualified thanks to eighth-seeded Janko
Tipsarevic's retirement.
