Randolph School to be rededicated in Pass Christian

Jan 20, 2013 (The Sun Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Pass Christian's Randolph School is again ready for its close-up. The 85-year-old school will be rededicated at 4 p.m. Tuesday in a ceremony at the school at 315 Clark Avenue.

Two of its wings will be named in honor of longtime Randolph staffers, teacher Victoria Webb and Principal George Watson.

A video presentation that chronicles its history, damage and restoration will be shown.

Randolph School was built in 1928 with assistance from the Rosenwald Foundation. It was the city's first elementary through high school to serve black students, said Ken P'Pool, deputy state historic preservation officer.

The Rosenwald Foundation was established in 1917 by Julius Rosenwald, president of Sears, Roebuck and Co., to provide matching grants for construction of schools for black students in the South.

Randolph School was among the largest and finest of Mississippi's Rosenwald schools, P'Pool said.

Only 20 of the 550 school buildings built by the Rosenwald Foundation have survived, he said.

Hurricane Katrina badly damaged it, and the school was considered for demolition. However, a coalition of school alumni, community leaders and historic preservationists advocated for the structure's rehabilitation.

Pass Christian began restoration in 2009 with funding assistance from the state Department of Archives & History, National Park Service, FEMA, South Mississippi Planning and Development District, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation and Sun Herald MultiMedia.

Architect Lawrence Jaubert and J.O. Collins Contractors Inc. worked closely with MDAH staff to restore the school's unique architectural details that had been so badly damaged by both time and storms, P'Pool said.
