1st LD: Merkel's party leads in key state election
HANOVER, Germany, Jan 20, 2013 (Xinhua via COMTEX) --
German Chancellor Angela
Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party led in a key state
election in Lower Saxony, exit poll showed on Sunday.
According to preliminary exit poll result released by German
ARD television, Merkel's conservative CDU gained a support rate of
36.0 percent in the state, 6.5 points higher than in the election
of 2008.
Its junior ally, the pro-business Free Democratic Party (FDP)
received 10.0 percent, much higher than previously expected.
CDU's main rival, Social Democratic Party (SPD) earned 32.5
percent of total votes, while its coalition the Greens claimed
13.5 percent of support.
The exit poll result is being updated. Official result of the
election is due to release late Sunday night.
The election in the fourth biggest German state by population
was seen as a rehearsal for the federal election this autumn, and
could affect campaigns for the next eight months.
