Waterloo's oldest cab company goes out of business

WATERLOO, Iowa -- Waterloo's oldest cab company is no more.
Employees at Yellow Cab Inc., which operated at 110 W. 14th St., got the news Thursday.
Now, all a call for a Yellow Cab will get is a recorded message with telephone numbers for two other cab companies in the area.
The demise of the cab company came a little more than three months after its owner, Kip Grimson, died at age 50.
Grimson, a longtime driver for Yellow Cab in Waterloo, bought the company in 1997.
Grimson's widow, Dina, told the company's three dispatchers and four drivers of the closure Thursday, said Thomas Orr, her son and an eight-year driver and dispatcher for the company.
"She wanted to try to keep it going," Orr said Friday. "At one point, she was talking about selling it, but it just became too much to try to deal with, with the four kids in the house and the business, so she decided it was time to close it."
Thus ended a Yellow Cab operation that, according to employees, had a history of service in Waterloo dating back more than 100 years.
Courier archives show that, a short time after World War II, Waterloo had two competing taxi companies, Yellow Cab and Aero Cab, but only Yellow Cab remained after 1970. Mike's Yellow Cab, which operated a franchise in Cedar Falls, went bankrupt in 1983, and a subsequent company in that city folded after only two years.
For about 20 years after that, Yellow Cab was the only local cab company.
Dina Grimson could not be reached for comment. Orr said she was in the process of moving and even he didn't know how to reach her.
"I'm assuming she doesn't want to talk to much of anybody right now," Orr said. "I had a feeling she was gong to close the door, but I figured it would be a lot sooner than it was."
Business had trailed off after Kip Grimson's death, but it had picked up recently, Orr said.
