UID registration turns chaotic in two wards [Madurai] [Times of India]

(Times of India Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) MADURAI: Registration of the Unique Identity Card in wards 30 and 31 of the Madurai Corporation turned chaotic and the civic body officials had to rush in and bring peace among the people, who wanted to outdo one another in getting their biometric forms registered.

The process has been going on for the past two weeks and people have been queuing outside the designated centres. However, lack of proper regulations methods made the residents of Gomathypuram, Anna Nagar r squabble with each other and even resort to physical violence.

In Gomathypuram, women, who were standing in the queues started backing off when some men began to fight among themselves. "Such procedures should be done under some regulation by at least ex-service personnel, because small problems can lead to bigger ones," said Swaminathan, a resident who came to the centre on Saturday.

Elder people were also made to seen standing braving the hot sun for hours on Saturday in a stretch because people as they did not want to miss the opportunity. "I made my children take leave from school as today (Saturday) was half-a-day and getting leave on Monday would be a problem," said Rani, a mother. However, a tent that was put up in front of the centre brought relief to the people.

A Justin, assistant co-ordinator of the National Population Registrar in Madurai corporation, who came to the spot, directed the staff to register the people according to the queue after which some order was brought.

He said the procedure would go on till next Sunday in the next two wards and that if the people came in order it would help the process to go on more smoothly and at a faster pace.

Meanwhile, a small boy from this area, used this opportunity to his advantage and put up a shop to sell water packets and Murukku. Hence, M Arun Kumar became a businessman in a single day. He managed to make a profit of Rs 50 in the first day.
