BRIEF: Duval schools spokeswoman reassigned after making 'offensive' comment

Jan 23, 2013 (The Florida Times-Union - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- After being tapped earlier this month for a promotion and a likely salary increase, the spokeswoman for Duval County Public Schools has been removed from the communication department for making an "offensive" comment.

"Effective today, I will be assuming a director position in Human Resources," Jill Johnson said in a statement released Wednesday morning.

"In my previous role as Director of Communications, I made a comment that may be offensive to some. While this comment was not made with malice, it was a lapse in judgment and I regret the impact it has had on the department. I am looking forward to my new role in this district." The statement did not elaborate on the specifics of her comment. Calls to Johnson's office were routed to the office of Superintendent Nikolai Vitti; the Times-Union has asked for and is awaiting his comment.

About two weeks ago the superintendent said Johnson was his pick to take the position of chief of public relations and marketing in his cabinet. The anticipated salary for that job was about $110,000.

Johnson's current salary is $98,000.
