Successful stallions to be part of auction
Jan 25, 2013 (The Augusta Chronicle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
With High Brow CD, Kit Kat Sugar and Reys Dual Badger -- NCHA Horses of the Year -- in this year's stallion auction, organizer Tom Holt is looking forward to this afternoon.
The Augusta Futurity Stallion Stakes Auction and Incentive Program will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the Windsor Club on the mezzanine level inside James Brown Arena. The event is free and open for the public. Holt said he's expecting 150 people, with another 30 bidders on the phone. Cash, check and credit cards are accepted.
At the auction, 72-75 stallion breedings will be available. Money raised from the auction will go into a purse for all the foals of the stallion eligible for earnings in the 2018 Augusta Futurity.
"From what everybody tells me this stands out a little bit more than in the past," Holt said. "One of the exciting things for me is we have multiple NCHA Futurity champions in there. We have stallions that have won here in Augusta. We've got some high-caliber horses in it."
With the money raised from the 2008 auction, this year's Augusta Futurity will pay out a total of $80,000 to the owners of 18 horses sired by a participating stallion in the third payout year of the Incentive Program. The participant with the top score in the Futurity Open will take home a check for $10,000.
"No matter how they finish in the finals, they're going to get a check," Holt said. "But the check they get from the stallion auction will be bigger."
At the first year of the payout in 2011, participants in the program did not fully realize what was at stake.
"Tommy Marvin and his customers won more than $25,000," Holt said. "They had no idea they had won that. They didn't realize their stud was eligible, because they hadn't come over here for a couple of years when the program started. They didn't pay any attention to it."
