D60 open enrollment begins
Jan 25, 2013 (The Pueblo Chieftain - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Open enrollment for students who plan to attend a school outside their attendance area in Pueblo City Schools (D60) begins today. State law allows students to attend any school of their choice as long as there is space available. Parents must be able to provide transportation for their child to attend a school of choice with the exception of some students with disabilities.
Parents must complete a school choice application for their child to attend a school other than their designated neighborhood school in the 2013-14 school year.
The applications are available online on the district's website, at all schools and the administration building.
The application is available in English and Spanish.
Parents who want to enroll their child in either Fountain or Corwin International magnet schools must complete a separate application, also available online.
The deadline for school choice and the magnet school applications is Feb. 24.
Students currently enrolled in a choice school do not have to submit another application.
The district must follow criteria in determining if a child is accepted into a school of choice if space is available, according to Brenda Krage, assistant superintendent.
"Last year we were able to accommodate a high percentage of choice requests," she said.
The criteria include:
--Students with a rating of unsatisfactory in one or more academic areas who attend a public school required to implement a turnaround plan.
--Students who have a sibling currently attending the chosen school.
--Resident students currently attending a local charter, private, online or home school.
--Students who live outside the school district boundary and finally, students who do not meet any of the criteria.
Parents will receive of letter of confirmation or denial of admittance to a school by March 24.
