Navy selects Cubic Systems for big training deal

Jan 26, 2013 (Orlando Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Navy's Orlando training agency named Orlando-based Cubic Simulation Systems as the winner of a $300 million contract to produce training systems for an advanced combat ship, the Pentagon said Friday.

The award comes at a critical time for Central Florida's defense industry, which has been shrinking amid slowing defense spending. Hundreds of jobs will be supported by the new work.

Cubic Simulation, the Orlando division of San Diego-based Cubic Corp., received three contracts -- each worth $100 million -- as part of the Littoral Combat Ship training program, according to the Department of Defense.

The longtime Orlando unit beat defense giants Lockheed Martin Corp., General Dynamics Corp., L-3 Communications Inc. and Northrop Grumman Corp.. Nearly a dozen prime contractors competed for one of the biggest deals the Navy's Orlando agency has awarded in years.

Cubic will produce systems for both versions of the ship -- one built by Bethesda, Md.-based Lockheed, and the other by General Dynamics. Cubic will also produce combat-mission specific training for both versions.

The Littoral is a high-speed, lightweight battle ship designed for coastal combat operations, including antiterrorist missions. It has been marred by cost overruns and technical glitches, but the Navy has put a top priority on adding 50 Littoral Ships to its fleet.
