KDDI mulls entering Myanmar's mobile phone market
(Japan Economic Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) TOKYO, Jan. 26 -- (Kyodo) _ KDDI Corp. is considering entering Myanmar's mobile phone market, seeing potential business opportunities in the Southeast Asian country, company officials said Saturday.
The move comes at a time KDDI is eyeing boosting its overseas operations particularly in Asian countries at a time when the mobile phone business is not expected to expand further in Japan, the United States and Europe.
The Japanese telecom carrier, working with Sumitomo Corp., plans to build communications infrastructure in the country, where only about 5 percent of the population of 62 million people use mobile phones, according to the officials.
Myanmar is the second market after Mongolia that KDDI is trying to break into. The company tried to advance its business in Brazil, Paraguay and some other nations but only its business in Mongolia remains intact.
