BRIEF: Oakdale schools to discuss safety
OAKDALE, Jan 26, 2013 (The Modesto Bee - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
A school board meeting Monday night will deal with safety issues in the wake of the Connecticut campus shootings and other attacks.
The Oakdale Joint Unified School District board will hear from school leaders, law enforcement and the public about ways to keep its nine campuses safe.
"People can make suggestions about what they think should be done to make schools safer," board President Mike Tozzi said.
Twenty children and six employees were killed in the Dec. 14 shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. The attacker, Adam Lanza, committed suicide, police said.
The massacre has prompted school districts across the nation to review their procedures for keeping intruders off campus and responding to emergencies.
Oakdale's meeting will include remarks from:
--Lester Jenkins, the city's police chief
--Larry Mendonca, the district's director of pupil services
--Stacy Graham, president of the Oakdale Teachers Association
--Madison Lane, the board's student member
State Assemblywoman Kristin Olsen, R-Modesto, has been invited.
The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Oakdale City Council chambers, 277 N. Second Ave.
