Empty cash bins stolen from bank

Jan 25, 2013 (The Virgin Islands Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- ST. THOMAS - A man was arrested Tuesday in connection with the theft of two ATM cash bins from Tutu Park Mall, but the bins had no money in them.

Givon St. Omer, 22, was charged with third-degree burglary and destruction of property.

St. Omer was recorded by surveillance cameras breaking into the Tutu Park Mall Scotiabank on Jan. 15, according to court documents.

Police said St. Omer used a 2-by-4 piece of wood to pry open the ceiling tiles of the ATM room, and then was able to move into the bank's lobby through the roof. St. Omer went into the safe, which had been left unlocked, and grabbed two ATM cash bins, then ran out the lobby door, into the Tutu Park Mall parking lot, according to police.

However, the Tutu Park Mall branch of Scotiabank had closed in November, and all of the bank's money had been removed, including any that would have been in the ATM bins.

V.I. Police Detective Sehkera Tyson said she was contacted on Tuesday by the Security supervisor at Tutu Park Mall, who saw St. Omer at the post office wearing the same white Nike sneakers as the man recorded on the surveillance video.

The arrest was the first for St. Omer.

His bail was set at $25,000 by V.I. Superior Court Judge Kathleen Mackay set his bail at $25,000, which he was unable to post.
