Wait lists start Monday for three ECISD schools
Jan 26, 2013 (Odessa American - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Starting Monday, three schools in Ector County Independent School District will begin compiling waiting lists for the 2013-14 school year.
Cavazos, Murry Fly and Jordan elementary schools are asking that families who apply to attend the schools to present proof of residency within each school's attendance zones.
The creation of the waiting list will prepare the overcrowded campuses for next year and openings are "expected to be limit," according to an ECISD press release.
ECISD says that openings are expected to be limited -- if any at all -- and applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis beginning Monday.
I ADDED THIS: Enrollment is bypassing the 800 mark: with 835 at Cavazos, 855 at Murry Fly and 921 at Jordan.
The three schools were closed to new enrollment earlier this year and about 130 students were forced to attend another school outside of their home attendance zones, according to an ECISD press release.
Last week, Cavazos, Fly and Jordan re-enrolled students and incoming siblings.
If residents have questions, they may call the neighborhood school or the ECISD student admissions department at 456-8890.
At the start of the 2012-13 school year, ECISD had more than 29,500 students, up 1,422 students from the same time last year, which is the highest number of students the district has ever had. Fly, Jordan and Cavazos closed their enrollment due to a septic system that can't take on any more students than it already has now.
The $129.75 million bond will build two elementary schools in West Odessa to accommodate crowding at Murry Fly and Cavazos, plus a school in north Odessa to help with crowding near Jordan.
