BRIEF: Desert Sanctuary receives food donation
BARSTOW, Jan 25, 2013 (Desert Dispatch - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
The American Legion Auxiliary Unit #324 Barstow formally presented food donations to Desert Sanctuary, after collecting items during the month leading up to Christmas.
Desert Sanctuary is the local domestic violence shelter for women and their children. The auxiliary unit provided the food to the non-profit organization at the American Legion Post in Barstow on Wednesday.
The all-women group started soliciting non-perishable food items from the community in November. As an incentive, each person who made a donation received a raffle ticket with the opportunity to win one of four gift baskets.
On Dec. 18, the raffle prizes were awarded as the food drive came to a close.
"The community does so much for us," said Evelyn Rodriguez, public relations chairwoman for the volunteer auxiliary unit. "We wanted to give back to another organization."
