Fleetwood student takes post in state organization

Jan 28, 2013 (Reading Eagle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Joseph Moyer Jr. has always been a go-getter.

He's the type of kid who wakes up at 5 a.m. to study, his mom, Jennifer, said. He never has to be asked to do his homework.

And he's always excited to take on challenges.

"Whatever is going on in school, he always wants to get involved," Jennifer said. "He's been like that since he was little." So it didn't come as a surprise to Jennifer and her husband, Joseph, when their son wanted to take on a big, new responsibility.

Joseph, 13, a Fleetwood Middle School seventh-grader, recently was named one of two middle school students in the state to serve as a member of the statewide delegation to the Pennsylvania Association of Student Councils.

"I thought it would be a good, new experience," he explained casually.

He was chosen after filling out an application and going through a series of interviews at a recent association conference, and was inducted earlier this month.

Joseph has been involved in student council at Fleetwood Middle School since fifth grade, saying he joined because he thought it would give him a chance to do some good things for his school. He's dedicated and organized, and his was the first name his adviser, Lisa Bernet, thought of when she was asked about a possible candidate for the 12-member delegation.

"I just saw tremendous leadership ability in Joey, so he was the first person to come to mind," she said.

The delegation meets four times a year and deals with matters like budgeting, leadership and recruiting other student councils to join the state association. Joseph has been named chair of the membership and outreach committee.

He will serve as a middle school delegate for two years and then can vie for a high school seat.

He also will continue to serve on his middle school's student council, where, he said, he's excited to keep pitching in organizing dances, decorating the school for holidays and doing fundraisers.

"I've also been thinking about a new project," Joseph said. "I want to form a student judge board that would decide how to discipline students." Based on past experience, he'll probably get that done, as well as all sorts of other things.

"We're excited to see what he's going to do next," his mom said.
