BRIEF: Brighton Plantation man in critical condition after logging accident

Jan 29, 2013 (Bangor Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- BANGOR, Maine -- A Brighton Plantation man was flown to Eastern Maine Medical Center by LifeFlight helicopter after being pinned between a chipper and a trailer as a result of a logging accident.

An EMMC nursing supervisor said Freeman Cromwell, 62, was listed in critical condition at 9:30 p.m. Monday.

The accident occurred around 9 a.m., according to Maine State Police. Cromwell was working at a wood chipping operation on land owned by Plum Creek Timber Co. and located just off Rowe Pond Road in Pleasant Ridge Plantation.

Cromwell, who was the driver of a tractor-trailer truck being loaded by a wood chipper, was pinned after walking to the back of the truck. The chipper slid on icy ground and pinned him against the trailer, according to state police Sgt. Peter Michaud. Michaud said Cromwell suffered "significant, undetermined" injuries to his legs and internal injuries to his torso.

Michaud said troopers are assisting inspectors from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration with the investigation, but no charges are expected in connection with the accident.
