BRIEF: Dog owners should get licenses by Thursday or face a late fee, Bangor city clerk says

Jan 29, 2013 (Bangor Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- BANGOR, Maine -- Bangor residents should plan to register their dogs by Thursday to avoid paying a $25 late fee, according to City Clerk Lisa Goodwin.

There are still 800 unlicensed dogs in the city. Another 1,600 already have been licensed, Goodwin said late last week.

Dog licenses expired Jan. 1, but owners are given a 31-day grace period during January.

"Beginning Feb. 1, state law mandates a late fee of $25 per dog in addition to the license fee," Goodwin said. That licensing fee is $6 for a dog that has been spayed or neutered and $11 for a dog that can still reproduce.

Residents may license their dogs by coming to city hall during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or online at www.maine.gov/informe/municipal/doglicensing.htm.

There's an additional $1 charge for online licenses.

Online licensing also may be accessed through the city's website at www.bangormaine.gov under a link on the city clerk's page. Online licensing ends after Jan. 31.

For more information, contact the city clerk's office at 992-4220.
