(IntelliNews - Weekly Reports Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Orange considers launching MVNO in South AfricaFrance Telecom's mobile arm Orange is considering launching a fully fledged virtual mobile network operator (MVNO) in South Africa, TechCentral reported. Orange's MVNO would be the second virtual operator in South Africa after Virgin Mobile, which uses Cell C's network, but the company wants first to lobby the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa to formulate regulations, which, according to it, will better govern relationships between network operators and MVNOs. In addition, Orange wants first to build its brand and gain a deeper knowledge of the South African market befor launching a MVNO. Orange is currently in the process of launching its consumer brands in the South African market through its recently established subsidiary, Orange Horizons, which has been set up with the goal of extending the company's services into new markets around the world. Orange is currently offering telecommunications services to retail customers in 35 countries worldwide, including 18 African countries. The French company is present in South Africa through its Orange Business Services arm, but has long been trying to enter the retail market. It has reportedly tried to buy JSE-listed IT services group Business Connexion. It has also tried to acquire local network operators several times, and would do it again if an opportunity arises.
