(IntelliNews - Weekly Reports Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Rwanda mobile phone penetration rises to 53.1% at end-2012Rwanda's mobile phone penetration rate increased to 53.1% as of end-December 2012 from 44.4% as of end-June 2012, East African Business Week reported, quoting data from Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency (RURA). The number of mobile phone subscribers in the east African country reached 5.69 million at end-December, up from 4.7 million in June. MTN Rwanda, part of South Africa-based MTN group, remained the biggest player on the mobile phone market with 3.43 million subscribers as of end-2012, followed by Tigo Rwanda with 1.87 million clients. Indian-owned Bharti Airtel, which launched its services as of April 1, 2012, had attracted 391,072 subscribers as of end-December, despite a limited geographical coverage of less than 10%, which translates into a 15% coverage of the population. MTN's geographical network coverage stands at 98.12% reaching out to 98.01% of the population, while Tigo's geographical coverage of 76.95% corresponds to 98.83% of the population. Both MTN and Tigo have received notifications from RURA and MTN was even fined last year for poor quality of services and network failures.
