BRIEF: Janesville gas station robbed Friday

A man walking without a jacket in dangerously cold weather was the first clue that led to the arrest of a Milton man after a reported robbery Friday morning at a Janesville gas station.
Police were called at 5:55 a.m. after a man entered the Lions Quick Mart, 104 E. Racine St., Janesville, and demanded money.
The man, who was wearing a jacket, left with a bag of cash. The temperature at the time was minus 3 degrees. The windchill was around minus 20.
Soon afterward, a Rock County sheriff's deputy spotted a man without a jacket on foot in the vicinity of Parker Drive and Oakland Avenue, which is within a few blocks of the store. The deputy detained the man, Nicholas D. Hughes, 25, of 424 Plum St., Milton. Video and other evidence later linked Hughes to the crime, said Janesville police Sgt. Brian Vaughn. Hughes was arrested about 7:15 a.m. on charges of robbery and a probation hold.
The coat and cash were recovered, officials said.
