BRIEF: Mumbai: 140% rise in crimes against women in city

Feb 03, 2013 (Hindustan Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Crimes against women in the city have risen by about 140% in January as compared to the same period last year.

While there were 116 such crimes registered in January 2012, the number has shot up to 275 during the first month of this year. Police statistics reveal that offences such as rape, outraging modesty and molestation have gone up substantially.

The police attribute the steep rise in cases to increased aware-ness among women following the Delhi gang rape in Dece-mber last year.

"Women are coming forward to register every misbehaviour," said Sadanand Date, joint commissioner of police (law and order).

The police are also registering all complaints that come to them. "We have issued orders to register all complaints and investigate them thoroughly," said Date.
