Grant gets film rolling at libraryThe program will focus on teaching teens how to produce video projects.

Feb 02, 2013 (Walla Walla Union-Bulletin - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- ADVERTISEMENT WALLA WALLA -- The next Scorsese or Spielberg might just get his or her big break at the local library.

The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation recently announced it is awarding the Walla Walla Public Library a $136,000 grant to install a technology and media lab that will focus on teaching teens how to produce video projects and maybe even a full-length movie.

"All libraries strive to be relevant and today's teens communicate and express themselves through social media such as Facebook and YouTube so we need to meet them where they are," library Director Beth Hudson said, adding that adult patrons will also be able to use the new facility.

The new film lab will be located in what is currently the library board room and is expected to be completed by this spring.

The lab will include video cameras, editing computers and a screening facility for the finished projects. The room will also serve as a meeting area for nonprofits and other groups.

A part-time instructor will be hired for the program, Hudson said.

"We're excited to be able to provide everything needed for teens to create with state of the art technology, to learn new skills, and to ponder possibilities in a library which is relevant to them," Hudson said.

Workshops will also be offered with guest filmmakers, photographers, animators and other experts.
