BRIEF: Inmate escapes from Stanislaus County Honor Farm
Feb 03, 2013 (The Modesto Bee - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
One inmate remained at large Saturday after escaping with a second man the day before from the Stanislaus County Honor Farm on Grayson Road.
Both inmates tried to swim across the San Joaquin River to escape pursuing deputies, but one barely made it across and was recaptured, the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department reported. Inmates Many Ros, 46, of Modesto and Michael Phan, 35, of San Jose were spotted by guards as they jumped off the clothing room roof at 5:35 p.m. Friday. Deputies chased them to the river. Ros swam to the south bank and got away.
Phan struggled to swim across the river and collapsed on the opposite bank. Emergency medical personnel responded by Zodiac boat and transported Phan to an area hospital, where he is expected to recover.
He is in custody for possession of stolen property and violation of parole. Ros was in custody for a possession of controlled substance.
