Success and Service: Air Force honors Modesto teacher

Feb 03, 2013 (The Modesto Bee - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Aaron Filbrun, a science and math teacher at Big Valley Christian School in Modesto, was honored by Air Force Association Chapter 144 as its Teacher of the Year. Frank D. Walterscheid, the chapter's president, made the presentation to Filbrun during a surprise visit to the school last week.

Filbrun teaches life and physical sciences and has become one of the school's go-to teachers for understanding new technology. He has been on Big Valley's staff for nine years.

The AFA chapter, also known as the Maj. Gen. Charles I. Bennett Jr. chapter, covers Merced, Mariposa, Stanislaus, Tuolumne and parts of San Joaquin counties and has about 260 members.

Each year, the organization honors those who teach math, science, technology or engineering.

-- Former Modesto resident Kristen Siefkin has been named one of the Portland, Ore., area's 40 most influential young people and will be honored on Valentine's Day in that city.

Siefkin graduated from Davis High School in 1990. She is vice president of Lane PR, a public-relations firm with offices in Portland and New York City. With more than 15 years of media-relations experience and leading the agency's food and beverage division, Siefkin has managed the development and execution of strategic public-relations and digital-marketing campaigns for a wide variety of companies, including E.&.J. Gallo Winery and The Wine Group.

She is the daughter of Sue and Randy Siefkin of Modesto.

-- Heritage Oaks, a housing development in Oakdale, received three awards at the National Association of Home Builders International in Las Vegas. The builder took home a gold for best 50-plus (units) outdoor amenity, an innovation award for outdoor amenity and a silver for best 50-plus affordable rental community.

Designed by KTGY and developed by the Central Valley Coalition for Affordable Housing in Merced and Adroit Development Inc. of Westlake Village, the complex is a 50-unit apartment community for low-income seniors ages 55 and older.

-- The inaugural Resolution Run -- Stop Hunger in its Tracks enjoyed a successful first year in terms of participation, with 280 runners competing Jan. 26 at Johansen High School in Modesto. The event was a joint effort between The Salvation Army and Inter-Faith Ministries. The agencies will split the proceeds -- which still are being tallied -- to restock their food banks.

Tim O'Donnell and Erica Wyrick were the winners in the 10K runs, while Travis Mondragon and Amy Stoffel prevailed in the 5K events. The runs began at Johansen's stadium and followed the trail along Dry Creek.
