BRIEF: PM asks ministry to set stage for municipal polls
AMMAN, Feb 03, 2013 (Jordan Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour on Saturday gave Minister of Municipal Affairs Mahir Abul Samin the green light to forge ahead with preparations for municipal elections, to be held before mid-September.
In a letter the premier sent to Abul Samin, Ensour said municipal elections should be held duly, in line with the relevant law.
Up to this date, the ministry has not taken any measures pertaining to the municipal elections, according to ministry officials who expected that election committees would not be formed before a new government has assumed office, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
In January, Abul Samin said the ministry would establish an ad hoc committee to draw up plans for the polls, although no specific date was given for the polls at that time.
So far, the elections have been postponed twice in a row, for six months in each case, after the delay was okayed by the Legislation and Opinion Bureau in the first instance, when elections were to be held in September 2012. The second six- month delay term will end mid-September.
