5 QUESTIONS with University Parent Media CEO Sarah Schupp
Feb 03, 2013 (Daily Camera - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Established out of the University of Colorado's Deming Center for Entrepreneurship, Boulder-based University Parent specializes in developing institution-specific guides and websites for parents of college students.
Founder Sarah Schupp said her firm aims to serve as "Cliffs Notes" to college life for parents of university students.
The company last week revamped its universityparent.com website to further position it as a resource on academics, career planning, health and safety, housing, finances and student life.
Schupp spoke with the Daily Camera briefly about her company and its latest endeavor.
The following has been edited for clarity and space.
1. How many schools have you brought on during recent years
Right now we have about 250 schools and we are expanding really rapid on the website. We're actually starting to provide information for schools over the country and looking to add another 150 this year.
2. How does that intended growth rate compare to past years
It's faster. Last year, we added about 50 schools to our site.
3. As you've broadened the resources on the website, do you still plan to have the physical guides serve as a complement
We think that both elements are really vital. Right now, our print product helps parents get to the site, so we see them working together. But the biggest growth we're seeing is on the mobile site.
4. How does the recent website overhaul play into your future expansion plans
We are planning to expand by providing information for parents regardless of where their students are enrolled.
Two months ago, we hired a fulltime content writer, Jason (Shueh), to help us product quality content for our site. We're actually partnering with (Boulder-based) BlogMutt, and they are helping sites like ours provide content on a rapid basis. We are trying to provide enough information so our site is the No. 1 destination for parents.
5. How did your advertising revenues fare last year
We've just seen incredible growth. We grew 20 percent over last year and we're anticipating 50 percent this year -- and we actually did that for January.
