Are big milestones in store for Tigers' Miguel Cabrera?

Feb 04, 2013 (Detroit Free Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- After winning the Triple Crown last season, Miguel Cabrera has increased his chances to reach some significant milestones.

According to the "Bill James Handbook 2013," Cabrera has a 58% chance of reaching 3,000 hits.

Cabrera, who turns 30 on April 18, has 1,802 hits in 10 seasons. He is the only player listed by the handbook to have a chance to break Pete Rose's record of career hits (4,256), although the chances are slim -- 2%.

Cabrera has 321 career home runs and is given an 87% chance to reach 500 home runs, according to the handbook. He's given a 7% chance of breaking Barry Bonds' record for all-time home runs (762).

The handbook projects Cabrera to have 199 hits, 38 home runs, 126 RBIs and a .331 average this season. Cabrera had 205 hits, 44 home runs, 139 RBIs and a .330 average last season.

Cabrera leads all players born in 1983 for a chance at the Hall of Fame, according to James' Hall of Fame Monitor. James awards points based on certain achievements, such as playing in an All-Star Game or winning a batting title. A player needs 100 points to be considered a Hall lock and at least 70 points to have a chance for induction into the Hall. James has Cabrera with 91 points. Tigers ace Justin Verlander, also born in 1983, is given 44 points.

The handbook has a suggested retail price of $26.95.

Tigers make grade ESPN's David Schoenfield recently issued his off-season grade for the Tigers, giving them an A-minus.

"I have a feeling the rotation will be stronger after (Doug) Fister and (Max) Scherzer had strong second halves, a full season of (Anibal) Sanchez and the full-time addition of (Drew) Smyly." Detroit Free Press news services contributed.
