BRIEF: Police: Suspect in Butte taxi robbery/shooting dead
Feb 05, 2013 (The Montana Standard - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
The man suspected in last month's robbery and shooting near a local taxi cab business is dead, according to Butte police.
Butte Sheriff Ed Lester announced Tuesday that investigators believe they know who committed the Jan. 24 robbery near Mining City Taxi and shot and wounded a 23-year-old woman. However, Lester said the suspect is deceased.
Citing "confidential criminal justice information," the sheriff wouldn't release the identity of the suspect or the circumstances of his death. Lester said the suspect acted alone in the robbery and there is no threat to the public.
The investigation into the robbery and shooting is continuing. Lester said the weapon police believe was used in the robbery and other items have been sent to the Montana Crime Lab in Missoula for analysis.
The deceased man became a suspect last week in the robbery, Lester said. Between then and Tuesday, the man was found dead. The sheriff released no further information on the man's death, only to say it doesn't appear suspicious in nature.
