The Fayetteville Observer, N.C., Live Wire column

Feb 08, 2013 (The Fayetteville Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Q: Is the Dream Giveaway that always features a pair of sports cars legit They say a portion of the donations you make to enter the giveaway goes to the Kids Wish Network. Do they really give those cars away -- W.S., Fayetteville A: They really give them away.

Vernon Grew, a 68-year-old Vietnam veteran from Houston, won a couple of Corvettes in the most recent giveaway.

Money raised through the giveaways goes to the Kids Wish Network, a Tampa-based charitable group that says it's dedicated to infusing hope, creating happy memories, and improving the quality of life for children who have experienced life-altering situations.

Charity watchdog groups aren't enamored with the network. Last year, CharityWatch said the group routinely spends the bulk of its budget on paying fundraisers, not granting wishes for sick kids. One of those fundraising companies is operated by the network's founders.

Q: Is a traffic light planned on Bingham Drive at the new intersection that's being created at Lakeridge Drive and Paintersmill Drive This is where the new Parks Place subdivision is being built. -- C.S., Fayetteville A: Yes. It should be up and running before people start moving in there. The developer is putting in the signal.

Q: How about at the intersection of Chickenfoot Road and Corporation Drive Are there any plans for a traffic light there It's extremely difficult to make a left turn onto Chickenfoot Road toward the Gray's Creek schools on school mornings because of the heavy traffic. This is compounded by inexperienced teenagers driving to school and 18-wheelers coming from the highway. -- C.B., Fayetteville A: The local office of the N.C. Department of Transportation has no plans to place a signal there but it also hasn't received a request from anyone who wants to see a signal there If you want to make one, call DOT's local traffic services office at 486-1452 and they'll do a study to see if they think a traffic light is needed there.

Q: There was a recent photo in the paper of a pen-and-ink drawing by a portrait artist who often works in coffee shops. Can you give his name again and how he might be reached -- A.V., Fayetteville A: You're talking about Winson Coker Clark, whose work is on display at Cape Fear Studios on Maxwell Street as part of a Black History Month exhibit.

You can reach him by email -- winsonclark@gmail.com.
