Assembly, School Board candidates file; Traini and Clary face off again
ANCHORAGE, Feb 09, 2013 (Anchorage Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Andy Clary, a member of the city Budget Advisory Commission, is challenging Midtown Assemblyman Dick Traini for an seat on the Anchorage Assembly in the April 2 municipal election. Clary lost a tight race against Traini for the same seat in 2010.
Six Assembly seats and two School Board seats are on the ballot, and the filing period ended at 5 p.m.Friday.
Clary and Traini are the only Midtown Assembly candidates. Clary is a computer programmer and analyst, and works for GeoNorth, LLC. Traini is a veteran, and is retired as a family consultant for the military. He teaches college history and political science classes part-time.
Clary said Mayor Dan Sullivan has already endorsed him.
"I expected that. What's new " said Traini.
Two Assembly incumbents are unopposed: Ernie Hall in West Anchorage and Paul Honeman in East Anchorage.
Here are candidates for the other Assembly and School Board seats:
--Eagle River-Chugiak Assembly: Three are competing for the seat being vacated by Debbie Ossiander, who served the maximum number of terms allowed. They are Pete Mulcahy, Amy Demboski and Bob Lupo.
--West Anchorage: Three are in the race for a West Anchorage seat that Harriet Drummond left in January when she became a state representative. The Assembly appointed former city budget director Cheryl Frasca to fill the city until the election, and Frasca is running to keep it. The other candidates are former School Board member Tim Steele, and Phil Isley.
--South Anchorage: Incumbent Jennifer Johnston faces Jim Cottrell.
The School Board members are chosen by the entire city rather than voting districts. They are designated "A" and "B".
--Seat A: Former state senator and Anchorage School Board member Bettye Davis is running against incumbent board member Don Smith.
--Seat B: Former state House member Eric Croft, retired teacher David Nees and Stephanie Cornwell-George are in the race.
