Couple buys a table of love from Four Seasons
Feb 09, 2013 (Austin American-Statesman - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
It's just a simple round, glass-topped, wooden table in the Lobby Lounge at the Four Seasons Austin.
But to Jamie Rose and Mark McGonigal, it symbolizes the start of their love. That's why they're buying it from the Four Seasons to place in their downtown Austin apartment.
"It's where we first met," says Rose, a 39-year-old lawyer. The two had a blind date last fall at the Four Seasons. It was brief, but effective.
"After she left, I just sat there for about three hours, bewildered," McGonigal, a 42-year-old commercial real estate developer, says. "I hate lawyers. She's a lawyer. But we really clicked."
They met half a dozen more times at the same table. A month later, McGonigal put his cards on the table -- that same table -- and proposed. They flew to Las Vegas and got married.
"It was a whirlwind," Rose says. "Neither of us had been married, and neither of us had any desire to. It was like being hit by a bus."
A couple of weeks ago, McGonigal called the Four Seasons and asked about buying the table. It's a request the hotel hadn't had before, but -- well, OK, the hotel said. They could buy the table for $475.
"I'd have paid $4,000 for it," McGonigal says.
"He's very romantic," Rose says. "And having the table, well ... it's not a spectacular table. But it means a lot. It reminds me of meeting my soul mate."
