Palestinian reconciliation dialogue ends in Cairo without tangible results
GAZA, Feb 09, 2013 (Xinhua via COMTEX) --
Three days of marathon talks between
Palestinian rivals on the internal reconciliation ended in Cairo
without achieving any tangible results on substantial issues, a
senior Palestinian official said Saturday.
Ahmed Majdalani, a member in Palestine Liberation Organization
(PLO), told Xinhua on the phone that the meetings discussed
substantial issues related to achieving reconciliation but ended
without any results.
"The substantial issues discussed in the meetings held in Cairo
are related to the legislation and the arrangements for holding
the elections of the Palestinian National Council (PNC)," said
Majdalani.
Salim Za'noon, Speaker of the PNC, the Palestinian parliament
in exile, chaired the meetings of the temporary leading
Palestinian body, which includes all factions in the PLO, as well
as Hamas and Islamic Jihad movements.
The meetings, which were co-chaired on Friday by Palestinian
President Mahmoud Abbas and Za'noon, failed to agree on the
election law of the PNC and the implementation of other
reconciliation issues.
"The meeting agreed to move up the issues that the Palestinian
rivals disagreed upon to the PLO executive committee for more
debates and discussions and then another meeting will be held
later," said Majdalani.
He added that the meetings in Cairo failed to agree upon the
formation of the transitional unity government and the date to
hold presidential and legislative elections in the Palestinian
territories.
However, Khalil al-Hayyah, a senior Hamas leader, told the pro-
Hamas al-Aqsa TV station that the meetings agreed to start the
consultations on forming the transitional unity government next
week.
"The Palestinian factions agreed in Cairo to decide the date
for holding elections when the circumstances are suitable," said
al-Hayya, adding that Hamas wants to form the unity government
fist to prepare the ground for a real reconciliation.
He added that Fatah "prefers at this stage to create more
positive atmosphere for this step (forming the new unity
government). Both Fatah and Hamas will keep working together to
achieve real reconciliation."
