Wrestling teams gear up for state meet
Feb 12, 2013 (Standard-Examiner - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Top of Utah wrestling teams were shut out of the state team titles last season, and they don't want that to happen again.
While Region 1 may boast the deepest 5-A league in the state, and Region 5 boasts two of the top three teams in the 4-A ranks, area wrestlers will have their hands full this week as they look for individual and team hardware at the state wrestling championships.
The state 5-A and 4-A wrestlers will battle Wednesday and Thursday at Utah Valley University's UCCU Center, with the 3-A, 2-A and 1-A teams grappling it out on Friday and Saturday.
Team titles are won with team depth, and several area teams are ready to show their stuff this week.
In the 5-A ranks, Syracuse battled Pleasant Grove step for step in one divisional qualifier, while Layton and Fremont finished 1-2 in the other divisional qualifier.
"Four of the top five teams in the state are from Region 1," Syracuse coach Troy Brown said. Butt to win a state title, your No. 2 guys have to be scoring. Pleasant Grove is probably the favorite based on that."
But don't count out the Region 1 champion Titans. Layton, Fremont and Weber also qualified a solid number of wrestlers.
Viewmont is the cream of Region 2, and could be in the mix as well.
In the 4-A ranks, Box Elder topped Mountain Crest for the Region 5 title, while Clearfield edged a tough field for a Region 6 championship last week.
Now the Bees, Mustangs and Falcons must contend with defending 4-A Maple Mountain, as well as several other Utah Valley teams.
4-A and 5-A action begins early Wednesday, with the finals set for Thursday at 6 p.m.
In the 3-A ranks, Bear River has the depth to make a top-three finish but Delta is the defending state champion and has the potential to repeat.
Morgan and several other Region 11 teams qualified a bunch of wrestlers. Millard is the defending 2-A champion, while Altamont is the defending 1-A champion.
Action begins at 8 a.m. on Friday, with the finals set for Saturday night.
