BRIEF: Dolphin has gone back to sea after going astray in Sandwich Marina

SANDWICH, Feb 12, 2013 (Cape Cod Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A wayward dolphin that made its way into the Sandwich Marina during the weekend blizzard appears to have gone back out to sea.

The dolphin has not been spotted since Sunday, Brian Sharp of the Cape Cod Stranding Network, said.

The dolphin's appearance Saturday and Sunday among the moored boats, lobster pots and pilings in the marina on the Cape Cod Canal was unusual, Sharp said.

The marine mammal is a common dolphin, an offshore species that typically spends its time in deep waters, he said.

Normally members of this species stick together and seek shelter during storms by going farther out to sea, not closer to shore, Sharp said.

The dolphin might have been lost or disoriented when it roamed into the sheltered marina waters, Sharp said. He said observers from the stranding network couldn't tell if the dolphin was healthy.

The dolphin spent part of Sunday swimming in a circle in the green waters of the marina, going right under the feet of people on boat slips and inspiring a local Coast Guard crew to take photos with their phones.

It's possible the dolphin was foraging for food when it went astray, Sharp said. There is marine animal activity in the bay, he said -- maybe it's out there now.
