Lobos won't play Hawaii, Nevada, San Jose in 2013
Feb 13, 2013 (Albuquerque Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
The New Mexico Lobos will not play fellow Mountain West Conference members Hawaii, Nevada and San Jose State this season in football, as per the league's scheduling plan.
But the Lobos will play at Boise State, a game that should net UNM a bonus payday, pending BSU's finished TV package. Boise State, as a condition of its staying in the Mountain West rather than leaving for the Big East, was granted the right to negotiate its own package for its home games.
In 2014, the Lobos will not play those same three schools -- Hawaii, Nevada, SJSU. In 2015 and '16, they'll not play Fresno State, San Diego State and UNLV.
T he Mou nt a i n We s t announced its revised, four-year plan Tuesday.
With the addition of San Jose State and Utah State, and with the decisions of Boise State and San Diego State to stay in the Mountain West after previously announcing plans to leave for the Big East, the MWC has 12 teams for football; Hawaii is a football-only member.
The conference presidents voted to split into two six-team divisions, with a league title game for the two division winners. Mountain Division teams will play each other and play three crossover games against West Division teams. It's the same in reverse for the West Division.
New Mexico's five fellow Mountain Division members are Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, Utah State and Wyoming.
In 2013, the Lobos will play Air Force, Colorado State, UNLV and Utah State at home. They'll visit Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Wyoming. In 2014, it's the opposite.
In 2015, New Mexico will play at home against Air Force, Colorado State, Hawaii and Utah State. They'll be on the road against Boise State, Nevada, San Jose State and Wyoming. In 2016, it's the reverse.
No d at e s h ave b e en announced for conference games. The Lobos' four nonconference games in 2013 are: Texas-San Antonio, home, Aug. 31; at UTEP, Sept. 7; at Pittsburgh, Sept. 14; New Mexico State, home, Oct. 5.
In 2014, UNM has nonconference home games scheduled against Arizona State and UTEP. They'll play at New Mexico State and UTSA.
If there's a negative for UNM in the Mountain West's plan, it might be that the Lobos won't again play at Hawaii until 2016 -- meaning the Lobos won't get a 13th game, allowed by the NCAA for teams that travel to Honolulu, until then. The Lobos beat Hawaii at Aloha Stadium this past season and went 4-9 on the year.
Lobo fans might also be disappointed that UNM will play in San Diego only once between 2013-16 -- this season; the two teams did not meet in 2012. Also, New Mexico will play UNLV in Las Vegas only once, in 2014, during the next four seasons. 2013 UNM Schedule
Aug. 31 vs. Texas San-Antonio
Sept. 7 at UTEP
Sept. 14 at Pittsburgh
Oct. 5 vs. New Mexico State
Conference opponents visiting UNM: Air Force, Colorado State, UNLV, Utah State.
UNM conference road games: Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State, Wyoming.
Conference teams UNM will not play in 2013 or 2014: Hawaii, Nevada, San Jose State.
