Gizmo Guru: Is the Lumia 920 going to revive Windows Phone?

Feb 16, 2013 (Mint - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Nokia Lumia 920 is the best Windows Phone 8 handset on the market, but is it also the best phone on the market This is the question that most buyers need to ask before they put their money down -- and the fact is that while the Lumia 920 delivers both fantastic style and good performance, the total package might still fall short for some.

In terms of hardware, the phone is not at the cutting edge anymore, but still remains top end. It has a 1.5GHz dual core processor and 1GB or RAM, along with a 4.5 inch screen. The screen is really good, colours are clear and the display is crisp. The touch sensitivitiy is fantastic and the screen dances at your fingertips.

The camera is 8.7MP and delivers amazing quality, it's the best phone camera on the market, but honestly, the competition has also improved and the difference isn't as huge as you might have heard.

The phone also comes with inductive wireless charging, but like the camera improvements, these technologies aren't so advanced and won't be a reason to buy the phone by themselves.

And on the software side, the phone falls short -- while Windows Phone is stylish and responsive, the app selection is definitely a problem. While it's become a cliche to say that Windows Phone lacks apps, the fact is that while there are plenty of good alternatives to your regular standbys on other operating systems... once you've taken the time to learn to use certain apps and uploaded data to the cloud, this is a hard switch to make.

If you're used to an iPhone or Android handset... this isn't the device for you. There's a lot of innovation and a lot of good ideas here, but a number of small usability issues add up to give the user a bad experience. This will improve, but it's going to take some time.
