New shop could sate ice cream yen
Feb 16, 2013 (The Garden City Telegram - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Kassandra Meyer, a stylist at Regis Hairstylists at Garden City Plaza, was looking forward to Friday because that's when Cravings, a new ice cream shop at 2214 E. Kansas Ave., No. 1, was scheduled to open just steps away.
"I know all of us here are really excited," Meyer said. "I know on Friday, that's where we'll be on our break."
Meyer said she thinks the shop, owned by Levi and April Lyda, will bring more traffic to the shopping center, "probably just because there's nothing like that anywhere."
Garden City does, however, have Dairy Queen, Baskin-Robbins, Freddy's Frozen Custard and other fast-food restaurants that sell ice cream.
Cravings' grand opening was Friday, and hours will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
April and Levi, who have two children and one on the way, say they think their location and the treats they offer will work for them.
The business will offer 16 flavors of Blue Bunny ice cream, malts, milk shakes, build-your-own sundaes, seven toppings, including nuts, sugar and waffle cones and cups of ice cream. Popular ice cream bars will be located in a freezer in the store. Candy bars will be available, as well.
Flavors include butter pecan, cherry nut, birthday cake, cherry fudge, bubble gum, mint chocolate chip, chocolate chip, praline pecan, cookies and cream, rocky road, strawberry cheesecake, vanilla, strawberry, Bunny tracks, chocolate chip and chocolate chip cookie dough.
Toppings are walnuts, sprinkles, Oreos, Butterfinger, M&Ms, Heath and Reese's. Hot fundge and carmel and strawberry and pineapple toppings also will be available.
"I think most of our traffic's going to be foot traffic, which is pretty good (at the center)," April said.
The couple, who hail from Tulsa, Okla., have been in Garden City for three and a half years.
"... We wanted to be our own (boss)," said Levi, who previously worked for Tatro Plumbing. "It came down to a day care (center) or this."
"We were kind of hesitant to open an ice cream shop, but we kept driving by Baskin-Robbins and there was always someone there. It might be a little slower in the winter, but I think it will be sustainable," he added.
For the short-term, the shop's only employees will be Levi and April, but eventually they plan to hire some help.
The spot where Cravings is located is in a corner right next to Claire's. It used to be a military recruiting center and was last occupied nine years ago, Levi said. As for the name, April said Levi's stepmother thought of it. Several possibilities were posed, but she liked that one best.
