Sherwood police think residential burglary is tied to online scam

Feb 15, 2013 (The Oregonian - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Police think a burglary Thursday night at a Sherwood home that involved the theft of more than $10,000 worth of items is linked to an online scam.

About 10 p.m. Thursday, police responded to a burglary in the 18200 block of Southwest Timbrel Lane. The homeowners reported a front window next to the door was broken while they were away.

The suspects went through the home's rooms, taking laptops, televisions, power tools, sports equipment and electronics, said Sherwood Police Capt. Ty Hanlon. The homeowners are still determining their total loss.

Investigators think the burglary could be related to an online scam that involved a resident of the home working for a company called, LWA Trade, Hanlon said. The resident's job was to receive packages at the home and then resend them to a location in Russia.

Sherwood police, Hanlon said, started investigating after the resident learned the packages were purchased with a stolen credit card and shipped to the home for distribution. The resident then stopped receiving and shipping packages, Hanlon said.

On Jan. 21, a man contacted a resident at the home, and asked about packages that should have been delivered, Hanlon said. The resident told him products were no longer being sent to the home, and that police were investigating. The man was upset.

Hanlon said the man told the resident, "You're going to pay," before leaving.

The man is described to be in his 20s, between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing 150-170 pounds. He was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt with a baseball hat that was pulled low, over his eyes.

Police conducted a canvass of the neighborhood Thursday after the burglary. Investigators learned that a trailer with wooden side panels was seen in the driveway of the home between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. No suspects were seen coming from or entering the residence.

Sherwood police are continuing to investigate and ask anyone with more information to call police at 503-625-5523.
