Whatever happened to ... Westside's only grocery store thriving

Feb 17, 2013 (Chattanooga Times Free Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Question: Whatever happened to the One Stop Shop Answer: It's open and operating well, said store owner and manager Moe Saleh.

Westside residents and people from around the city marched and held meetings to bring attention to the need for a grocery store in the Westside.

Then in October 2012, nearly two years after the first communitywide march for a grocery was scheduled in December 2010, the One Stop Shop opened.

It is the only grocery store in the community of nearly 3,000 residents.

Dollar General, the store that provided groceries for the Westside for more than a decade, closed in fall 2010.

"Our community needs this. We need a lot more than just a store in this area," said Joyce Hardwick, president of the Westside Community Association who volunteers at the One Stop Shop.

Without the grocery, the only option several elderly and disabled residents had was to ride in wheelchairs while others walked near the interstate to Buehler's Food Market about 1.5 miles away. It's not easy maneuvering through traffic in a wheelchair while holding bags of groceries, residents said.

Since opening, the One Stop Shop has started accepting food stamps. It also added a hair supply area. It's still working on getting a butcher and a produce area, Hardwick said.

The problem is finding a grocery supplier that will service a small area at affordable prices, Saleh said.
