Organizers to include elephants in 2013 fair

Elephants are coming to this year's Davis County Fair.
Fair organizers recently have gone out of their way each year to book an animal act that county residents don't get to see every day.
This year is no exception.
The Davis County Commission has approved an $8,000 contract with NV Events & All Attraction of Tampa, Fla., to bring an elephant exhibit to the county fair scheduled for Aug. 14-17 at the Davis County Legacy Events Center in Farmington.
"The elephants will be our animal attraction," Davis County Fair Coordinator Alli Barnes said. "I thing elephants are a fun animal, definitely not something kids see every day."
In addition to the elephants being on exhibit, elephant rides will be offered, Barnes said, an experience many people will likely be able to scratch off their bucket list.
Before booking the act, Davis County officials asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture for a report on the Florida business. That report was clean, Barnes said.
"It draws a lot of people," Barbara Garcia, an owner of NV Events & All Attraction, said of the family-owned interactive elephant exhibit.
The exhibit provides daily elephant rides and allows people to feed the animals. Garcia said it is highly successful as it allows the public to get much closer to the animals than they would at a zoo or a circus.
Garcia is a fourth-generation elephant handler. She said the exhibit moves across the country during the summer in a custom-built trailer. It is also educational, as the exhibit is able to answer many questions people have about elephants.
"Elephants in Davis County," Davis County Commissioner John Petroff Jr. said, a hint of surprise in his tone.
Other animal acts recently booked by the county fair include a rattlesnake wrangler, an alligator wrestler and a large tank of stingrays people were allowed to pet by sticking their hands in the water.
Barnes said she enjoys bringing in exhibits county residents wouldn't normally get to see, giving them the opportunity to learn a little more about different species.
