Crime line now accepts tips via text message and on website [Virginian - Pilot]

(Virginian - Pilot Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) By Patrick Wilson The Virginian-Pilot Norfolk Crime Line now accepts anonymous tips on its new website and via text message.

Officials announced the additions at a news conference last week at police headquarters downtown.

Text tipping can be done with a cell phone or any texting device, said Phil Davenport, president of Norfolk Crime Line.

Tipsters must text the word NORFOLK plus their tip to 274637. As with tipsters who call Crime Line, those who text will remain anonymous and can earn cash rewards. Each tipster is assigned an ID number and their phone number. Police don't know their identity. "Anonymity is of utmost importance," Davenport said.

The members of the Crime Line board are volunteers. Anonymous tips are investigated by police detectives.

Norfolk Crime Line received 288 tips in 2012, resulting in 94 arrests and 118 cases solved, including four homicide cases, according to Crime Line. Cash awards in 2012 totaled $22,250.

Officials will encourage students to use the new text tipping feature. And like anyone else, they'll earn cash if their tip leads to an arrest or a case being solved.
