Richard D. Pineda, associate director of the Sam Donaldson Center for Communication Studies, has been named its director.
The Donaldson Center is a companion structure to UTEP's Department of Communication, and is named after ABC broadcast journalist and UTEP Distinguished Alum Sam Donaldson.
Pineda, who holds a Ph.D. in Communication from Wayne State University, was appointed associate director in September 2010 by Patricia Witherspoon,, founding director of the center and current dean of The College of Liberal Arts.
The native El Pasoan first returned to the university in 1996 as an MA graduate student and again in 2004, as an assistant professor in the Department of Communication.
"Dr. Pineda will be an excellent director of the Donaldson Center," Witherspoon commented. "He will initiate new projects and programs that will take the Center's activities to a new level."
"I'm honored to be named director of the center, especially as the university continues gaining prominence as a national research university with a 21st century student demographic." said Pineda. "Elevating the profile of the center is one of my chief priorities, especially so that more of our students can benefit from the life and experience of Sam Donaldson as well as from other media professionals."
