Jaitley tapping accused also targeted Amar

Feb 20, 2013 (Hindustan Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The private detective arrested by the Delhi Police for allegedly procuring BJP leader Arun Jaitley's phone records is the same man who was held for tapping former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh's phone in 2006. Anurag Singh, who owns a private detective agency in Connaught Place, was arrested on Monday night along with an accomplice.

Son of a retired customs official, Anurag studied medicine to become a doctor. But after getting fascinated with the world of detectives, he gave up the idea of practicing medicine, and opened a private detective agency called V-Detect 13 years ago.

In the world of private detectives, Anurag soon made a name for himself.

Then in 2006, he was chargesheeted and arrested in the Amar Singh tapping case -- the most explosive of its kind in the country. At the time, it was alleged that Anurag, with the help of a small-time private detective, forged a phone interception sanction and tapped a private phone number at Amar Singh's house.

His emergence as the main accused in 2006 came as a shock to many in the Delhi Police special cell, where had many contacts. People who know him say that in the past, he helped security agencies track numbers of suspects in various cases.

Investigators say that after the Amar Singh case, Anurag's wife -- an English lecturer at a Delhi college -- dissuaded him from continuing his line of work.

But Anurag was addicted. After securing bail, he dealt in stocks for a while. Once he made enough money, investigators suspect he procured surveillance devices and software from Singapore and Israel.

It is now suspected he may have targeted other high-profile people as well.

"The court has remanded him in police custody. We will seek clarifications on all these aspects from him. It is likely that he may have targeted phone records of other politicians and bureaucrats," said a police source.
