EDITORIAL: Soup group sounds like a 'soup-er' idea

Feb 21, 2013 (Daily Gazette - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- What kind of soup will the first Rock Falls High School Soup Group Community Project serve on March 10 We're not sure yet.

It could be chicken noodle or potato, beef barley or tomato, split pea or vegetable.

But we do know that the soup group idea has the potential to fill not only stomachs but a few holes in local community groups' budgets.

The soup group is being organized by Heather Shore, an art teacher and yearbook adviser. Part of the proceeds will help pay for the yearbook, while the rest will go toward a deserving community project.

People who represent various projects will speak at the soup group. People who attend will buy soup, a beverage, and four $1 tokens for $7, then listen to the presentations and use their tokens to vote for the project they like best. All projects that receive votes will earn some cash; the yearbook will get the rest.

What kind of projects are we talking about School-based initiatives, church groups, and community groups, such as the homeless shelter, food pantry or animal shelter.

The soup group idea originated in larger cities. It now has reached the Sauk Valley.

"I love the idea that it's very community centered," Shore said.

"We want to work with the community and be a part of it in a very symbiotic way." Indeed.

Soup groups provide an opportunity for people to socialize, connect with other individuals and groups, and be fortified, individually and collectively.

Only 220 tickets are available. They can be bought in advance at the high school office. The rest will be offered at the door.

Mark your calendar for March 10, 5 to 7 p.m. at the high school cafeteria, 101 12th Ave.
