Hours to change for gun licenses
Feb 21, 2013 (Pauls Valley Daily Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
BPORTERFIELD@PVDEMOCRAT.COM -- A change is coming to the Garvin County Sheriff's Department thanks to the high volume of people applying for handgun licenses these days.
Normally offered each weekday the office in Pauls Valley is open, that will be cut down a bit starting in March.
Sheriff Larry Rhodes said the change is coming next month to help out his staff, which must deal with both their regular job duties and higher number of handgun applications coming into the sheriff's office located in the county courthouse.
"For whatever reasons the number of applications has gone way up," Rhodes said.
"That takes time for my staff and away from their other duties," he said about the gun applications.
"It does take away from the employees' time with other duties. We don't have anybody specifically for that. That's the reason for these new hours..
Effective March 15 the processing times for the Self Defense Act and concealed carry handgun applications at the sheriff's office will be limited to 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
"We're going to limit it to these days," he said, again stressing the mid-March start time.
The sheriff said it could be any number of reasons for the dramatic jump in the numbers of people looking to get a handgun license.
The increase isn't just something limited to this part of the state.
"The OSBI had a record number of applications in January," Rhodes said, referring to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.
"The numbers are up all around," he said. "It's trickling down to us. It's really been busy with them.
"I want the public to know this is coming with the self defense applications."
