BRIEF: Slide show offers details about UT merger legislation
Feb 22, 2013 (The Brownsville Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
In a 12-minute slide show, state Rep. Rene Oliveira has released information detailed in H.B. 1000, the bill meant to create the new "super university" and merge existing schools.
"While the bill administratively reorganizes our two universities, their campuses, and the RAHC, people have many questions about how things will work. Those questions run the gamut from who will decide the name to when can students enroll in the medical school," Oliveira said in a statement. "I want to try to answer those questions, and reach as many people as we can. So, we produced a web video to try to reach more people."
On Wednesday, Oliveira, D-Brownsville, testified in front of the House Higher Education Committee regarding the details in the bill.
The bill itself does not establish where the new university will be located, but it sets up a panel of experts that will make recommendations to the University of Texas System Board of Regents.
According to the video, it will take anywhere from 18 to 24 months for the transition to a super university to occur.
