BRIEF: Inmate attempts suicide in Butte jail
Feb 22, 2013 (The Montana Standard - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Corrections officers at the Butte jail were able to stop an inmate attempting suicide early Friday morning.
Butte Sheriff Ed Lester said a 20-year-old man was attempting to hang himself just before 2 a.m. in the bathroom before another inmate and jail staff interceded. The inmate was treated at St. James HealthCare and has since been returned to the jail in good health, the sheriff reported.
The identity of the inmate wasn't released.
Lester said the inmate used a bed sheet and tied it to railing in the bathroom window and around his neck. Another inmate first noticed the man attempting to hang himself and intervened. Jail staff noticed the commotion and also intervened, Lester said.
Lester said the inmate had been in the jail for a long time and wasn't considered a suicide risk. As of Friday morning, the inmate has been placed on suicide watch, the sheriff said.
